Single Screen Roundup

See what's on your independent big screens this weekend

Celebrate My Fair Lady's 50th Anniversary with a special screening this Saturday at the Avon Cinema. This eight time Oscar winner has been restored using state-of-the-art technology, making the tale of Eliza Doolittle's transformation from a disheveled cockney girl into a proper high-society lady more radiant than ever. A behind-the-scenes bonus featurette will screen prior to the film.

Playing into next week is documentary Meet The Patels, a comedic look into the life of Ravi Patel as he manages the madness that occurs when cultures clash in the name of love. What elevates this documentary, however, is how it reveals the often unexplored issues that lie beneath stories with this set-up, such as questions of cultural assimilation and the complex nature of tradition.

The Austrian horror film Goodnight Mommy, which has already terrified most of the internet with its trailer alone, will be playing this weekend. Set in an isolated lakeside house, Goodnight Mommy tells the visceral story of two brothers as they deal with the changes their mother has undergone due to her cosmetic facial surgery, both in her appearance and in her behavior. Produced by the infamously punishing Ulrich Seidl, director of 2013's Paradise trilogy, this brutal film specializes in shredding nerves and making skin crawl.

Director Ramin Bahrani's economic parable 99 Homes starts playing at Jane Pickens this Friday. After suddenly losing his home during the 2008 housing market catastrophe, Dennis Nash (Andrew Garfield) is given an opportunity to get his house back. But this opportunity is given by a ruthless real estate shark (the often haunting Michael Shannon) who tangles Dennis in his web of immorality and greed. With a supporting performance form the criminally underrated Laura Dern, the critically acclaimed ''99 Homes' is as thrilling as it is thought-provoking.
