The holidays are a time for traditions, togetherness, and, of course, toasts. And when it comes to pairing the season’s most comforting dishes with the right glass of wine, Sakonnet Vineyard in Little Compton knows exactly what to pour.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Sakonnet Vineyard has been crafting wines shaped by Rhode Island’s coastal climate since 1975. “This time of year is all about the food; from the Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings, to holiday cookies, to the dishes that promise good luck as we enter a new year,” says Marissa Stashenko, director of operations. “A perennial challenge for many is choosing the wines that will best complement all the wonderful flavors on the table and please the palates of their guests. Our wines are approachable enough for everyday enjoyment, yet complex enough to be worthy of a celebration.”
Together with her husband, winemaker James Davids, Stashenko offers pairing tips that take the guesswork out of hosting. For bright, crisp flavors that pair beautifully with roasted seafood or poultry, go for a Vidal Blanc or 2023 Sauvignon Blanc. The Belcourt White blend shines alongside turkey, potatoes, and creamy sauces, while the vineyard’s signature Eye of the Storm Rosé is a lively match for fried chicken, charcuterie, or even fruit desserts.
Red wine lovers can reach for the elegant Pinot Noir, known for its red fruit and earthy undertones, which is perfect for glazed ham, duck, or chocolate treats. For something bolder, Belcourt Red or the Cabernet Franc & Merlot blend bring rich, layered flavors to hearty roasts and braised dishes.
Open year-round from Thursday through Sunday, Sakonnet Vineyard offers more than great wine. Guests can sip and stay awhile with a seasonal café menu, yoga classes, harvest events, and live music. Whether you’re stocking up for holiday dinners or planning a cozy day trip, there’s always something to celebrate at Rhode Island’s most storied vineyard.
