Local High School Students Get a Glimpse of College Life at Brown University

Hundreds of high school students from 17 local high schools in Providence, Pawtucket, and Central Falls recently had the unique opportunity to experience college life firsthand during Brown University's annual College Day. This event, now in its third year, is organized by the university's Annenberg Institute for School Reform and Office of the President.

The day began with an inspiring welcome from Michael Ochoa, a junior at Brown University studying international and public affairs. Ochoa, who grew up in Pawtucket and Central Falls, shared his journey from a low-income, formerly undocumented background to college life. "I see education as liberation," expressed Ochoa, emphasizing the power of education to uplift communities and bring diverse voices to the decision-making table.

Throughout the day, students participated in various activities designed to give them a glimpse into the daily life of a college student. They took campus tours, engaged in interactive learning sessions, and attended panel discussions on topics such as the college admissions process.

One of the highlights was the interactive sessions where students could choose from nearly 50 different workshops covering a wide range of subjects from STEM to the liberal arts. Jaydan Wirawan, a junior from Central Falls High School, found the day to be eye-opening. "Before today, higher education wasn't much on my mind, but now I'm excited to explore the possibilities at Brown and other institutions," he said.

The event also serves as a professional development opportunity for local high school administrators and strengthens the relationship between Brown University and the surrounding educational community. Through these collaborations, Brown supports K-12 education in Providence with teaching, mentoring, research, and financial investments.

Brown President Christina H. Paxson encouraged students to consider applying to Brown or other Rhode Island universities.
