Taste Test: Spring Salads

A fresh meal fro a fresh start to the season

Posted

Spring is in the air, which makes us think about playing outside, getting fresh fruits and vegetables and most of all (gulp), eventually hitting the beach. Shedding winter insulation doesn’t have to be a bland venture. Area restaurants strutted their stuff as we sampled delectable salads from across the Bay. Looks like getting beach-ready will be delicious this year.

Fruits and Veggies
The Waldorf Salad topped with chicken from The Blue Kangaroo Cafe hit all the right notes. Crisp mesclun mix served as the foundation while goat cheese, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, Granny Smith apples and bite sized pieces of chicken drizzled with a raspberry vinaigrette combined for a palate pleasing experience. 328 County Road, Barrington. 401-289-2292, www.BlueKangarooRI.com

Hail Caesar
The Square Peg kept their Chicken Caesar Salad straight forward, to the point and refreshing. Crisp romaine lettuce was generously topped with shredded Parmesan cheese, crunchy croutons and juicy sliced chicken all tossed in a creamy Caesar dressing. This classic preparation satisfied our craving for the much-loved dish. 51 Miller Street, Warren. 401-215-3831, www.SquarePegWarren.com

Just Beet It
The Beet Salad from Chomp Kitchen and Drinks was almost too pretty to eat – almost. Lucky for us we couldn’t keep our hands off of the superbly creamy goat cheese, butternut squash ribbons, honey poached beets, green apples and candied walnuts drizzled with an ancho chile vinaigrette. 440 Child Street, Warren. 401-289-2324, www.ChompRI.com

Beefed Up
We brought our appetite for the Heidelberg Steak Salad from Redlefsen’s. Perfectly medium rare slices of steak delicately sat atop crisp greens, red onion and creamy and tart blue cheese crumbles which were lightly coated in a sherry vinaigrette. Our favorite part was that the steak was grilled, which made us dream about grill season. 444 Thames Street, Bristol. 401-254-1188, www.Redlefsens.com
