Healthcare is getting more mobile, and Salve Regina University is leading the charge.
The Newport-based institution has officially launched its Health and Wellness Community Outreach Program, complete with a fully equipped mobile unit designed to deliver healthcare education and preventive services directly to communities across Rhode Island.
Stretching 40 feet and fully ADA compliant, the unit houses two private counseling rooms, an exam room, and a suite of educational models and materials. It is staffed by Salve students and faculty from nursing, social work, health sciences, and the Salve Compass program. For students, it offers hands-on training. For residents, it provides a vital resource close to home.
The program stems from the vision of Dr. Debra Cherubini, associate professor of nursing and director of Salve’s RN-BSN program. With the support of U.S. Senator Jack Reed, who secured a $1.95 million federal earmark, that vision became reality. The funding covered the purchase of the vehicle, state-of-the-art simulation technology for campus labs, and several years of operating costs.
“Rhode Island needs more health care professionals,” Senator Reed said at the unveiling ceremony on September 22. “Salve Regina is stepping up to train the next generation with real-world experience in communities where it’s needed most.”
Newport Mayor Charlie Holder joined hospital leaders and nonprofit representatives from across the state at the launch, signaling strong interest in future partnerships. Outreach locations are now in the works, with the unit expected to roll out this fall.
University President Dr. Kelli J. Armstrong called the initiative a natural extension of Salve’s mission. “This program creates exceptional learning opportunities for our students while supporting the health of our communities,” she said.
By bringing education and screenings to populations that often face barriers to care, the mobile unit aims to improve access, build awareness, and strengthen health outcomes across Rhode Island.Organizations interested in partnering with the program can contact Dr. Cherubini at debra.cherubini@salve.edu.
