Each year the Rhode Island Press Association (RIPA) hosts an awards competition among member organizations where reporters, editors, photographers, and designers submit their best work to be judged by a partner US press association. RIPA is a nonprofit organization that promotes the interests of newspapers and other publications, and has been advancing journalism standards and educational opportunities in Rhode Island since 1886. This year’s banquet was held April 28, 2023 at Chelo’s Waterfront Hometown Bar & Grille in Warwick.

Providence Media, publisher of Rhode Island's premier lifestyle magazines, including Providence Monthly, So Rhode Island, The Bay, and Hey Rhody, is pleased to announce that it won 12 awards for categories in writing, design, and photography.

In the Best Cover category, Abigail Brown, senior editorial designer, took first place for Hey Rhody’s Annual Summer Guide; in that same category, Nick DelGiudice, general manager/creative director received honorable mention for “The State of Black Owned Business,” also for Hey Rhody. Brown took second place for Best Feature Front Page for So Rhode Island’s cover story on Block Island, “Live Like an Islander.” Additionally, DelGiudice placed second for his Food Photo for So Rhode Island’s “Savor the Season”; Personality Photo/Portrait for Providence Monthly’s “Call of the Wyrd”; and Photo Series/Picture Story for Investigative/Analytical News Story in So Rhode Island’s “Where are the Clams?”

In writing, Abbie Lahmers, managing editor, took second place for the Hey Rhody Newsletter in the new Email Newsletter category. Karen Greco, former staff editor and contributing writer garnered second place for her Food/Dining Story “Women Rule the Kitchen” for So Rhode Island; Investigative/Analytical News Story honorable mention for So Rhode Island’s “Where Are the Clams?”; and third place for Providence Monthly’s “Call of the Wyrd” in the Religion/Spirituality Story. Ken Abrams, who joined the team as staff editor earlier this year, took third place in the Local Tourism Story category for So Rhode Island’s “Wickford Past and Present.” The art/editorial team collaboratively won second place in the Distinction Special Section for “Pure Gold” for So Rhode Island

During the annual banquet, the press association elected officers for next year: Elyse Major, editor in chief, will remain co-president with Ethan Shorey of The Valley Breeze; Carlos Muñoz of The Boston Globe Rhode Island replaces Michael McDermott as vice president; Sarah Francis, formerly of Rhode Island Monthly, will remain treasurer; and Will Richmond of The Providence Journal and The Newport Daily News replaces Linda Lotridge Levin as secretary.
