The name may be slightly confusing – if New York is in the title, then how can this be an icon of Rhode Island’s culinary scene? The reasoning behind it, though, is quite logical. The original owners of this infamous wiener joint – Nicholas Stavrianakos (Stevens) and his father Anthony – were Grecian immigrants who initially settled in Brooklyn. In the 1930s, the family moved to Olneyville in Providence, where they opened a small eatery serving hot wieners and a limited lunch menu. In 1953, the restaurant moved to its current location and has served these wieners – special meat sauce, celery salt, onions – the same way ever since.
