Life on the Farm
See what's growing with New Urban Farmers
New Urban Farmers' Garden of Life at Galego Court is located in Pawtucket
The Garden of Life is located within a housing community, and relationships with the neighbors have been crucial to its success
The Garden of Life at Galego Court encompasses 1.5 acres of land
Bleu Grijalva and Emily Jodka are the Executive Director and Assistant Director, respectively, of New Urban Farmers, a nonprofit organization
Most of the people who work at the farm are volunteers
New Urban Farmers' Geodesic Dome Greenhouses are used as indoor grow spaces to start seedlings, mix compost and grow various plants throughout the year
Approximately 10,000 seedlings are growing within the farm's geodesic domes
NUF uses an innovative aquaculture system to breed fish and grow plants
Fish waste in the symbiotic aquaculture system provides fertilizer for plants, which then in turn filter the water for the fish
Part of NUF's mission is community outreach, particularly with children in Pawtucket and Central Falls
Local children are able to learn agricultural skills and techniques, as well as have access to fresh food, at the Garden of Life
NUF pride themselves on teaching children an appreciation for fresh-off-the-farm produce, instead of mass-produced junk food
“We’ve created a closed-loop system. The residents feed the soil and the soil feeds the residents,” says Bleu Grijalva of New Urban Farmers
