Bakers all over Providence are infusing rainbow everything in their sweet treats this month to celebrate Pride. While these delicious desserts are (literally) the icing on the cake, don’t forget to show your support by learning about and donating to local LGBTQIA+ organizations and resources. There’s Rhode Island Pride, the largest LGBTQIA+ advocacy nonprofit serving the state (most famously known for their Pride Month festivities and year-round event efforts), and Youth Pride RI, uplifting young people and dismantling homophobic and transphobic environments through programming. One small, sweet step forward in supporting the community this month is ordering any of the following desserts, the proceeds from which help raise funds for these organizations and others.
Pre-order this week for Basil and Bunny’s Pride-themed MMMBop-Tart, a vegan strawberry-filled pop tart decked out in rainbow stripes and sprinkles, available for pick up Friday at Hope & Main in Warren. A portion of the proceeds from all of Friday’s sales go toward Rhode Island Pride.
Blush Bakeshop's vegan Rainbow Pride Donut sold out last week, but check back soon for its return. A percentage of Pride donut proceeds go toward For The Gworls, supporting the Black transgender community through rent and affirmative surgery funding. Make sure you mask up before you pick up – Chantal Galipeau, a local designer and maker selling clothing out of Hungry Ghost Press, is donating all proceeds from her recent batch of masks to the same cause.
If you missed your chance to preorder one of Nitro’s housemade Key Lime Pies in support of the Black transgender community through The Okra Project, you can still browse their online pick-up menu and consider making a donation to the organization.
The Birthday Cake Batter frozen sammie at Tricycle Ice Cream, made up of cake batter ice cream squeezed between two confetti cookies, both celebrates the ice cream shop’s sixth birthday and raises funds for Youth Pride RI. A portion of proceeds from Wildflour Vegan Bakery’s Pride Whoopie Pies, gluten-free chocolatey delights, support the same organization.
For more festive fun, rainbow bagels will make a reappearance this year beginning June 26 at Providence Bagel. And with signature bubble waffle cones that are already a sight to behold, Kow Kow's Unicorn Waffle Cone is a customizable explosion of sprinkles, complete with an edible unicorn horn.
