Wally’s Hot Dog Cart is parking at a permanent home on Thames Street. “I was always looking for a brick and mortar,” says founder Brad Head. “The opportunity on Thames Street worked out perfect.” Wally’s new home has two bars on two levels and features a “modern-retro look.” They’re adding an extensive wine list and craft cocktails that feature fresh-squeezed juices and house-made bitters. Local beers pour from all the draft lines. The menu features “super approachable and familiar food made with the highest quality ingredients,” including burgers and, of course, Saugies.
“We’re excited to be part of the community,” says Head, who notes that Wally’s strives to be a cool neighborhood hangout. “We think this brings something unique to the area.” Even though Wally’s has a storefront, the carts continue to roll out at various locations all year. Newport
Cheese lovers, keep an eagle eye out for the opening of Mozz in Bellevue Gardens later this month. Owner Luca Mignogna attended the Institute for Artisan Cheese in Vermont and spent six months in Molize, Italy, where he grew up, working with a local caseificio (a dairy that makes cheese) and learning the Italian tradition of cheese-making on a large scale. When he returned stateside, Mignogna with his wife Christina, sold their handmade mozzarella in Boston Public Market before moving to Eataly’s Boston location.
At their Newport storefront, the Mignogna’s are importing the buffalo milk from Italy to make authentic Buffalo mozzarella. They plan on carrying other fromage varieties and importing traditional Italian cheeses from the little-known Molize region. “We know a lot of great cheese-makers and we want to support local, as well,” Christina adds. Attorney Frank D. Camera fell in love with the restaurant business while working his way through college and law school. With his kids now grown, the Barrington resident decided to pursue his foodie passion and open an upscale sports bar, The 286 Club.
Camera knew he “wanted a place where people could get a good steak or Italian dish and hang out after.” Come for the food (the menu ranges from bar food to gourmet entrees) but stay for the fun: seven televisions are tuned to sporting events, or come for the live music and karaoke. An expansion opening in late January includes two golf simulators, more TVs, and a second stage. Plus, they have a large projector for special events, like the Super Bowl.
