This year’s annual holiday art show pivots to an online format to showcase local makers

Posted

The artist organizers behind the Foundry Artist Show saw the pandemic as an obstacle but certainly not a barrier to hosting their 38th annual show this year. Instead, the team got to work thinking up what a virtual show would look like and creating a platform that continues to support their members while also giving patrons the chance to chat and ask questions while they shop. In many ways, the show will look familiar: it’s still juried, still a holiday shopping staple from a long-standing organization, and you can still peruse works from more than 60 of the region’s top artists.

The only difference? Come the morning of December 3, you won’t need to get out of bed to dive into the weekend-long show. “It’s not just buying online,” explains Michelle Phaneuf, the Foundry’s marketing manager and a ceramic artist by trade. “You have the opportunity to click in and say ‘hi’ and talk to the artists, ask questions about the work, so I think that part of it is fun.” Once the link goes live, you can browse the event page by artist, where they’ll feature photos and videos of their work, along with video chat availability to connect over their wares or simply catch up. “I think one of the biggest things that I’m going to miss the most about [in-person shows] is that interaction with customers, the people that I see every year,” says Phaneuf, “but the video chat gives us the opportunity to have a little of that back.”

From fine art prints and mixed media pieces to ceramics, jewelry, and all variety of artisan crafts, shop unique finds for the folks on your list that already have it all, and know that you’re supporting local artists. “The thing that’s interesting about our show that’s different from others is that we are artist run,” says Phaneuf. “Everything that we do for the show, it’s one of the artist members who’s making that happen.” Watch for the Foundry Artist Show link to go live December 3-6, with shipping and pick-up options available on an artist-to-artist basis.
