If you’ve ever wanted to pet a turtle, hike through crisp fall leaves, and learn about the secret lives of owls all in one day, now’s your chance. And the best part? It won’t cost you a dime.

Thanks to a partnership with Bank of America, the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium in Bristol is opening its doors for free on select Saturdays this fall. On September 27, October 25, and November 22, families and nature lovers can explore everything from craft tables and live animal encounters to guided hikes and hands-on science activities, all at no charge.

“There are so many ways visitors can connect with the nature of Rhode Island,” says Morgyn Ellis, Director of the Nature Center and Aquarium. “Whether it’s meeting an animal ambassador, going on a guided walk, or creating nature crafts, these experiences become even more meaningful when shared with friends and family.”

Each Free Family Fun Day runs from 10am-3pm and includes kid-friendly programming that changes with the seasons. September kicks off with “Wings and Things,” a celebration of creatures that fly. October brings “Autumn Exploration,” while November dives into the world of reptiles with “Scales, Scales, and More Scales.”

The goal, according to Ellis, is to spark curiosity and build connection. “Often, one impactful experience can lead to a lifelong passion for caring for the natural world,” she says. “This partnership helps us reach people who may not have had the opportunity to visit otherwise.”

Jeffrey Hall, Executive Director of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, adds, “With Bank of America’s support, we can share the wonders of nature with everyone.”

The Nature Center also has big plans for winter. From evening owl prowls to frozen science experiments for kids, the team is determined to prove that nature doesn’t hibernate. “When folks need a break from the winter weather, the aquarium is a great place to warm up and get to know some of our popular residents,” Ellis says.
