A Taste of Winter

The Newport Winter Festival and more delicious happenings

Posted

It’s that time of year again: the Newport Winter Festival returns to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Between February 15 and 24, Newport County comes to life with over 150 different daily food and live music events. Honestly, anyone expecting to attend should create an itinerary, because there is simply too much to just wing it.

One of the most anticipated events of the festival is the 18th Annual Samuel Adams Chili Cook-Off happening on February 16 from 11am-3:30pm. Attendants are encouraged to bring an appetite, since public opinion determines which of the competing restaurants and caterers earns the title of best chili in town. Tickets are available for purchase at the event, and they cost $9 for adults ($7 with a button) and $3 for children ages 6 to 12 ($2 with button).

The “with button” price difference refers to the festival’s souvenir lapel button. For a one-time purchase of $6, this souvenir button provides either free admission or significant ticket price reductions to all festival events, depending on the event itself. In addition, during the ten-day festival, area restaurants are offering special discounts for individuals wearing the button. Some of the ongoing daily festival events include a make-your-own marshmallow snowman workshop, multiple Newport Vineyard wine tastings, the nacho tasting, a cookie decorating workshop and Newport Storm Brewery tasting tours.

CULINARY TIME TRAVEL
Hast thou wondered which meals were cooked before thy modern conveniences? Wonder no more: on February 2, the Massasoit Historical Association invites the public to an Eighteenth Century Dinner at the Maxwell House in Warren. Using tools and recipes of the time, the association creates an authentic two-course meal featuring such dishes as roast beef, brandied cherries and beet root pancakes, followed by such desserts as candied pineapple or chocolate puffs. Dinner seating is limited to only 16, so call 401-245-0392 today for ticket prices and to reserve your spot.

TRUE BLUE DINING
For individuals wanting high-class rather than historical, the Rosecliff Mansion is hosting a Blue Tie Wine Pairing Dinner and Auction on February 9. The evening begins with a five-course dinner and dessert selection created by Russell Morin Fine Catering, with wine pairings supplied by both Bellevue Wine & Spirits and Newport Vineyards. A silent auction follows, in which the proceeds benefit URI scholarships to help students further their educational pursuits. After dinner and the auction, guests can enjoy live jazz at the Bellevue Bar in nearby Hotel Viking.

NEW AND IMPROVED
What’s a chef want for a gift? A new kitchen, of course. And that’s exactly what Chef Kevin Fitzgerald got from Sardella’s Restaurant, which closed for some time in January for kitchen renovations. The new kitchen will include updated flooring and cooking equipment. Don’t miss Chef Kevin’s latest creations after the kitchen’s completion.
