“I want this to be a healing hub,” says Alix Tillett of her newly opened superfood cafe, BOL. “I want it to be deeper than a cafe. I want it to be a place for people to learn and feel better.”
BOL serves nutrient-rich foods like acai bowls, smoothies, chia seed pudding, homemade oat and coconut cashew milk, matcha lattes, and granola – all gluten- and dairy-free, plant-based, and organic. The cafe also hosts workshops, like lessons on Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine. It’s the third location and only one open year-round; the flagship is on Cape Cod and the other in California. The prevailing essence of each is a dedication to holistic healing, something near and dear to Alix ever since she was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease. Ditching the antibiotics that she said did more harm than good, Alix embraced the possibilities of how food could shift the body’s ability to move, think, and feel.
“It’s incredible to share this with others,” Alix reflects. She’s also excited for the opportunities at the newest BOL, including a warm menu, which will feature hot rice and oatmeal bowls and soups through winter.
The Shelter Harbor Inn’s new restaurant menu is a trim list of appetizers, salads, and entrees made from local ingredients. There’s New England favorites like clam chowder and mussels and linguine, alongside inventive plates like blackened shrimp and grits and scallops served with cauliflower puree. The cocktail list features fun concoctions like the South County Sidecar and When Figs Rye. Then, of course, there’s a curated wine selection, which will eventually be part of special weekly wine tastings, says hotel manager Kimberly Baruti. However, the refreshed dining options at this Westerly favorite are just part of the inn’s greater makeover.
Last March, Shelter Harbor Inn was purchased by new owners, and over the course of 2019, each of the three buildings have been re-done in an eclectic, farmhouse fashion, featuring plenty of reclaimed barnwood and rustic details juxtaposed with modern touches.
Tavern on Main in Wakefield, the casual neighborhood pub known for happy hour-style apps and beer on tap, rings in the new year with a new addition: Upstairs@TheTavern. What was once a venue space for the former Saltwater Tavern has been renovated with a full bar and lounge, kitchen, and dining area with moveable booths and tables for easy reconfiguration.
Owner Christian D’Agostino reveals that Upstairs@TheTavern will be an entirely different concept with an Italian focus, harkening back to their days as the Italian Village Restaurant, bringing strictly Italian fare to Main Street. The menu will feature a large selection of specialty pizzas – pesto and shrimp, butternut squash and sausage – pasta, and small sharing plates, plus 14 additional beers and an expanded wine list. Christian is excited to bring what he refers to as an alternate dining experience to patrons, plus space for parties and events. “There’s a lot of possibilities!”
