South County Nightlife: Live On Stage

Posted

The Ocean Mist
There are beach bars, and then there’s The Ocean Mist in Matunuck. It’s not just any beach bar. It’s the beach bar. It’s the kind of come-as-you-are, good-vibes-only place that you find on vacation and never want to leave. The waves crash under the deck, and the whole place is regularly filled with live jams from cover bands and musicians performing original music. The Labor Day Weekend roster includes a Talking Heads tribute, a Bob Marley tribute and Badfish, which is the Sublime tribute. It’s also open well after beach season ends, with performers like Steve Smith and the Nakeds performing into the fall, and music scheduled every weekend year-round.

The Narragansett Cafe
It’s hard to put your finger on the best part of The Narragansett Cafe in Jamestown. Sure, it’s a low-key neighborhood bar that serves good food and affordable drinks. Sure, it’s open 365 days a year. Sure, they have a killer Sunday afternoon Blues, Bloodies and Brunch. But on top of all that, The Ganny has live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, plus Sunday afternoons. And it’s not just any music - it’s bands from all over New England that deliver rock and the blues, the kind of live and loud music you can’t help but dance to, even if you don’t think you’re the dancing type. Maybe the best part is this: there’s never a cover.

The Greenwich Odeum
Since its impressive renovation, The Greenwich Odeum has been bringing in huge names in music like Todd Rundgren and Peter Noone. This month, they’re hosting Doug Woolverton’s Tribute to Miles Davis on September 16, Big Head Todd and the Monsters on September 23 and Spyro Gyra on September 30. A word to the wise: check their schedule far in advance. The seating is limited and the big shows sell out fast.

The Courthouse Center for the Arts
Part art gallery, part theatre performance space, part live music venue, The Courthouse Center for the Arts defies description, except to say that there’s something fun and interesting happening there nearly every night of the week. Concerts this month include a September 16 tribute to Bob Dylan, and a performance by the legendary bluesman Duke Robillard on September 23.

Captain Nick's Rock and Roll Bar
The tourist season may end for Block Island this month, but that just means there’s going to be even more room to dance at Captain Nick’s Rock and Roll Bar. The kitschy pirate theme only adds to the good times and laid-back island vibes. The Captain has The Booze Beggars playing on September 2, and Dr. Westchesterson on September 3.

Newport Blues Cafe
You might need to cross two bridges to get there, but the drive to the Newport Blues Cafe is worth it. The venue is known for curating killer local bands, and has live music every Friday and Saturday all year long. This month features performances by World Premier on September 8, Velvet Skies on September 16 and 7 Day Weekend on September 29.
