Avon Cinema

99 Homes
After a lengthy film festival tour throughout 2014 and early 2015, director Ramin Bahrani's economic parable 99 Homes starts playing at the Avon this Friday. After suddenly losing his home during the 2008 housing market catastrophe, Dennis Nash (Andrew Garfield) is given an opportunity to get his house back. However, this opportunity is given by a ruthless real estate shark (the often haunting Michael Shannon) who tangles Dennis in his web of immorality and greed. With a supporting performance from the criminally underrated Laura Dern, the critically acclaimed 99 Homes is as thrilling as it is thought-provoking.

Cable Car Cinema

Meet the Patels
Starting on Friday and playing into next week is documentary Meet The Patels, a comedic look into the life of Ravi Patel as he manages the madness that occurs when cultures clash in the name of love. What elevates this documentary, however, is how it reveals the often unexplored issues that lie beneath stories with this set-up, such as questions of cultural assimilation and the complex nature of tradition.

Jane Pickens Theater

Pawn Sacrifice
Edward Zwick, director of Defiance and Blood Diamond, covers yet another international conflict based on real-life events: the 1972 World Chess Championships. Starring Tobey Maguire as chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer, Pawn Sacrifice starts this Friday and plays until next Wednesday, October 14. The film is a character study that depicts the struggle between genius and madness within Fischer as he prepares to play against Boris Spassky (Liev Schreiber) of the USSR during the Cold War.

Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon
Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead, the new documentary on the entertainment empire National Lampoon, will be playing for one night on Wednesday, October 14. With interviews from key writers, staff members, and performers, this documentary chronicles the comedy powerhouse as it grew from a hip, transgressive magazine into the iconic company known for Animal House and the Vacation series.

Kickstarter Film Festival – Thursday, October 15

For one night only, 32 theaters across the country will be screening the Kickstarter Film Festival, and two of these theaters happen to be in Rhode Island! The Cable Car Cinema and Jane Pickens Theater will be showing two programs, consisting of a feature and one or two shorts, that range from a documentary on boxing to a mockumentary on vampires. Better yet, they are free with an RSVP at the festival's website, giving you no excuse to miss out on this event.

Program 1 @ 7:00pm

Afronauts (short)
Inspired by true events, Frances Bodomo's short film focuses on the unlikely third runner in the historic Space Race between the USA and USSR - Zambia. Shot in stunning black and white, Afronauts tells the story of the African space program that was dedicated to beating the two biggest international superpowers of the time into space.

What We Do In The Shadows
If Christopher Guest made a movie about vampires, it would probably look a lot like What We Do In The Shadows. Co-written and co-directed by Flight of the Conchords collaborators Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, this mockumentary focuses on four roommate-vampires from different eras (the modern vamp Deacon, the 1800s dandy Viago, the more carnal Eastern-European Vladislav, and the ancient Orlok-esque Petyr) and how they deal with modern life and their shared residence.

Program 2 @ 9:20pm

World of Tomorrow (short)
Maybe most well-known for his animated short Rejected, which went viral in the early days of the interweb, Don Hertzfeldt's newest short film is World of Tomorrow, a time travel story about a young girl and what she sees in her distant future when visited by her clone. Don't let the stick figure animation fool you, however. This film has won 28 awards from festivals around the world, and is bound to present some heady sci-fi concepts that will stick with you.

Submarine Sandwich (short)
From the writer and director of the Academy Award nominated short Fresh Guacamole, a stop-motion film about the creation of guacamole from unusual objects, comes Submarine Sandwich, a stop-motion film about the creation of a submarine sandwich from unusual objects.

T-Rex
This intimate and fierce documentary follows 17 year-old Claressa 'T-Rex' Shields, an undefeated boxer from Flint, Michigan, as she trains for her appearance in the 2012 Olympics. Equal parts nail-biting and inspiring, 'T-Rex' is an unmissable coming-of-age story that shows how a scrawny 11 year-old overcame obstacles both in and out of the ring in order to become the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing.
