Single Screen Roundup

Here's what's happening at your local art house theaters

The Cable Car
In accordance with The Cable Car’s mission to keep the silver screen quirky in Providence, this week sees the return of the annual Providence French Film Festival. The full listing for the weekend can be found on their website, but for my money Level Five looks outstanding. Billed as a documentary, the film follows a woman as she attempts to program a video game based on the little-discussed in the West Battle of Okinawa. Looks to me like a cyberpunk-themed history lesson as taught by David Cronenberg. Yes please!

Avon Cinema

On Thayer Street The Avon is showing the Oscar-winning Whiplash as well as offering a Julianne Moore double header. Playing multiple times all weekend will be Still Alice, which she won the Leading Actress Oscar for last weekend. In it she delivers a powerful performance as a Columbia linguistics professor grappling with early-onset Alzheimers.

For the Friday and Saturday late night crowd we’re treated with The Big Lebowski which, in addition to featuring Julianne Moore, just so happens to be the greatest American comedy of the 1990s if not ever. Period. And that’s enough of a reason to be excited, but this is just the most recent in a hat trick of surprises. After December’s screening of Vertigo and January’s surprise weekend presentation of Blade Runner can we start to expect more regularly scheduled cult and classic screenings from The Avon? Or would asuming that be OVER THE LINE!

Jane Pickens Theater
The post-Oscar love continues in Newport this weekend as well, as the Jane Pickens Theater will also be screening Still Alice and Whiplash.  J.K. Simmons’ full tilt crazy performance as a sadistic band leader in Whiplash nabbed him the win for Best Supporting Actor. If there’s one award season darling you actually manage to get to this year, Whiplash might be it.
