Salt and Aqua offer nautically-inspired clothing all year round

Posted

Emily Wheeler grew up in New Hampshire, and attended Roger Williams and the University of Queensland, Australia for Marine Biology. After school, she landed in Florida, where she opened the first Salt Boutique. She now has that store, a Salt in Tiverton and Aqua in Bristol. She talked to us about marine-inspired style and Mother’s Day.

Salt is such a fun boutique: It really incorporates a beachy lifestyle all year long.

Most of the products we carry at Salt are designed for a seaside lifestyle. Easy fitting pants that can be dressed up with a good shoe, flowy sweaters that can be worn over a bathing suit or with a great necklace. Tops that can be worn to a fancy dinner or to a barbecue, depending on accessories. Pieces that can be worn everywhere. I like our pieces to be basic so that the customer can put their own touch into every outfit, whether it’s their favorite shoes, grandmother’s ring or the ten bangles they wear on their wrist every day.

Let’s talk about what’s going to be in style this summer, now that we can finally put away our winter clothes.

This summer we’re bringing in some great silk tops, easy cotton ponchos, super soft cotton shirts from Peru and a fun dress line from England (just to name a few). Everything is super comfortable (as always) and easy to wear. We like small nautical touches in our outfits: a gold shoe, a striped top, white pants, and brass bracelet... nothing too bold. Think a French sailor vibe by adding tiny touches.

I love the customizeable necklaces you have in the store.

They’re hand stamped by a stay at home mom out of Colorado. Customers can come in and build their own necklace with our display, or they can order a completely custom necklace, complete with all they names of their children, birth dates... anything. These make an amazing Mother’s Day gift! Full customization takes two weeks, so plan accordingly.

What’s similar at your sister store, Aqua, in Bristol? What’s different?

Aqua in Bristol has a bit of a more urban feel than Salt clothing there can be worn to work, to dinner or on the weekend. A lot of our clothes at Salt are made for the vacationer, whereas Aqua’s collection has a less beachy feel to it. As much as we would all love to, not all of us can be on vacation all the time! Aqua is similar to Salt in the clothes are all easy pieces to wear and are always comfortable. Why buy something uncomfortable?

What items from the store are you really coveting this season?

I’m personally really looking forward the new line of dresses from England. The fit is perfect, the material is to die or and the prints are killer! They will be in the store by mid-May.

Let’s talk Mother’s Day gifts. What do you recommend for mom this year?

If your motherdoes not have a customizable necklace yet, then it is a must for Mother’s Day. Put your own personal touches on it, you and your siblings’ initials, the grandkids’ initials, a love charm, etc. and she’ll love it. My mom wears hers every day and has for years.
