If you’re a comic book enthusiast, chances are good that the first Saturday of May is like a holiday to you. Since 2002 it’s been Free Comic Book Day, a promotional effort led by Diamond Comic Distributors. Nearly fifty titles are supplied by Diamond to participating shops in the US and around the world, ready to be picked up for free by visiting fans. This year, like so many other events, FCBD needs to be postponed.

In a statement posted to the event website, Diamond Founder and CEO, Steve Geppi states that “The severity and timing of the impact of the COVID-19 virus can’t be predicted with any certainty, but the safety of our retailer partners and comic book fans is too important to risk. As always, we appreciate your enthusiasm for and support of the comic industry’s best event and look forward to celebrating with you later in the Summer.” Updates will be posted to the FCBD website and social media channels.

Recently #Creators4Comics announced that its five-day charity campaign raised $433,166 for the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC) to support comic stores and indie bookstores hit hard by COVID-19. Started by a small group of creators, the charity auction quickly grew as comics creators, authors, and celebrity participants posted 635 auctions on Twitter and other platforms. People who want to continue supporting #Creators4Comics can now set up monthly donations via the BINC website.
