Get Ready for Labor Day Weekend

Where you need to be and what you need to be doing to make the most of the last blast of summer

Posted

Labor Day weekend is here, and you need to get out and do something fun to give summer 2013 a proper send off. Fortunately for you, we've rounded up some of your best options:

All Weekend

The ne plus ultra of Labor Day weekend events in Rhode Island is always the Rhythm and Roots Festival at Charlestown's Ningret Park. It's a full weekend of barn-storming, foot-stomping, whiskey-drinking, roots-rocking Americana featuring legends like Steve Earle and Taj Mahal. Plan to stay the whole weekend if you really want the full experience.

If your prefer your Americana to be of the sporting rather than the musical variety, head over to McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket as the Pawsox, vying for first place in their division, tee off on the last place Syrcause Chiefs. Friday and Saturday are the last two games of this home stand.

Head to the New England Tech campus on Saturday and Sunday for Festival Fete's East Greenwich Art Festival, featuring over 150 artists, a children's craft center and strolling entertainment courtesy of Big Nazo puppets.

Friday

Celebrate the summer's end in East Greenwich... with the appropriately named East Greenwich Summer's End. There will be art, music, a children's parade and a closing performance by the United States Navy Band at Eldredge Field.

Watch the sun set over the ocean and enjoy a night of music and food at during Cabaret On the Lawn at Watch Hill's Ocean House. There will be a cocktail reception and buffet, followed by a theatrical tribute to Doris Day.

Rock out on the farm as Sandywoods Farm hosts a CD Release by the Becky Chase Band. The local roots rocker brings her powerful voice to an outdoor concert in Tiverton. The show takes place in Sandywoods'new BYOB indoor concert venue.

One of comedy's best couples takes the stage at the Newport Yachting Center as the Summer Comedy Series presents Nick Offerman with Special Guest Megan Mullally and Her Band. It will be an evening of laughs and music – and it's probably going to get weird.

Saturday

It's a Providence/New York mash-up at the Columbus Theatre in Providence as former Providence-gone-New-York outfit Last Good Tooth returns, along with fellow New Yorkers She Keeps Bees and Providence-based Dr. Jones and the Shiners.

Dance the night away by the beach – and maybe start an end-of-summer fling – as Plenty of Singles Dance Presents the Beach Foam Dance Luau Party at Marley's in Oakland Beach. The party will be rocking from 4pm until 1am.

Relive those headband and legwarmer glory days of rock as Pat Benatar hits the Newport waterfront with her best shot. It's part of the Sunset Music Series at the Yachting Center.

Check out some jolly good, cheerio sports action on Porstmouth's beautiful Glen Farm as the Newport International Polo Series continues with USA vs. England. Let's show these Brits what we're made of.

Sunday

Celebrate an all-American holiday with an all-American meal: Newport's Vanderbilt Grace presents its Labor Day BBQ in its outdoor Garden Terrace.

Close out the summer with some high culture. The RI Philharmonic continues its Summer Pops series at Bristol's Independence Park.

The best tasting beer is the one you earn. The Finish for a Guinness 5K gives you just such an opportunity as it races through historic downtown Warren.

We don't recommend blacking out on Labor Day weekend – unless you're talking about your wardrobe. Party in sleek style at Fete in Olyneyville during Noir: All Black Labor Day Exclusive. DJ Drama will keep the crowd moving.

Can't say goodbye to summer? Try to hold on vicariously as Movie Night at Castle Hill Inn continues with a screening of The Endless Summer. This seminal 1966 documentary follows two surfers on an around the world trip.

It's not really a holiday unless there's a parade. The East Providence Labor Day Parade will fill that bill with floats and family fun. It kicks off promptly at 10am from East Providence High School (2000 Pawtucket Ave.) and winds its way to City Hall (145 Taunton Ave.)

Of course, you could always simply spend the weekend soaking up the sun and sipping cocktails at a beach or waterfront bar. Just a quick correction - the Becky Chace CD release concert at Sandywoods is actually an INDOOR concert. It will be held inside the air-conditioned Sandywoods Center for the Arts, a newly built BYOB concert venue that can seat 150.
