First Works Presents an Artist Up-Close Conversation With Animator Miwa Matreyek

Posted by FirstWorks

LA-based animator, director, designer and performer Miwa Matreyek will discuss the methods and inspiration behind her “Glorious Visions in Animation,” to be shown on March 25th, 7:30pm at Providence College Smith Center for the Arts. “Glorious Visions in Animation” features Matreyek’s newest work, “Infinitely Yours,” which explores the web of intricate connections between humans and climate change, and “This World Made Itself,” a journey from Earth’s epic beginnings to today’s fast-paced, human world.

An internationally acclaimed multimedia performance artist, Matreyek has brought her work to such notable entities as MOMA, Lincoln Center, TED, Sundance New Frontier, and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Coming to animation by way of collage, Matreyek creates live performances in which she interacts with her animations as a shadow silhouette. Her work lives whimsically at the tipping point between the animated and the theatrical, the imagined and the poignantly real.

Miwa Matreyek is presented in partnership with Providence College as part of FirstWorks’ Earth First programming. Special thanks to National Grid Foundation, CDQ Trust, Nordson Corporation Foundation and RISD Museum for making this program possible.
