An artsy East Bay shop offers a local philosophy

Posted

As someone who harbors a quiet appreciation for the arts, (read: a jealous envy of artistic talent) I love to marvel at creativity. Local art is becoming less of a trend and more of a lifestyle in Little Rhody; Karen Valcourt of Bohème makes that philosophy her business. Bohème features handmade pottery, clothing, custom prints and paintings and mesmerizing reflective photography– each piece teeming with organic and ethereal design elements that are characteristic of the tender inspiration of each artisan.

The accomplished thespian and dabbling artist proclaims that her shop is more than just goods. “I want to make this a place where you can see beautiful things and learn how to create them,” she says. Stressing the need to maintain a community for the arts, Karen will be opening her shop for a variety of classes beginning the first week of February. She will be hosting courses on pastel painting, henna and acting.

Admittedly, one of the biggest draws of local art is fashion jewelry, which Karen updates often, courtesy of Etsy featured designers like Kristin Aylward Sargeant. The custom designs are enchanting and cozy – a simple nestled egg pendant called “Rustic Robin’s Nest” caught my eye immediately. Even if you’re just an admirer of the arts, Bohéme is truly non-discriminatory: “You create in your own way even if you don’t know it. There are so many ways to express yourself.”
