Taking jewelry to new heights in East Providence

Posted

As I anticipated my visit to M.R.T. Jewelers for this month’s column, all I could think of was the intimidation factor. I prepared to hear painfully high prices and be faced with beautiful things I surely could not afford. But when I was greeted warmly by David Audette and his adorable, shaggy dog Mandy, I knew I was in a very different place.

David’s father, Joseph Audette, bought the original storefront and name from another family in 1972 and wanted to maintain the integrity of the previous business. Although one of the biggest events for M.R.T. is their annual Wedding Band Blitz, which takes place March 28-29, custom pieces designed in-store are a huge draw.

David, who is soon to launch a line of jewelry called Chainge, does most of the designing and has never had formal training. “People like dealing with the owners and our highly skilled craftsmen directly” he explains. “I can go in the back and modify products to suit someone’s needs. That’s where you save money.” They are known for remaining completely approachable after all these years, “No one should ever feel intimidated to walk through our door,” says David. “We’re a big business, but were small enough to affordably produce gorgeous jewelry.”
