Cravings for Crustaceans

South County's crab cakes met our savory standards

Posted

South County is known for many things, but there are two in particular: picturesque summers and seriously delectable seafood. What happens when the two collide? The crab cake, with its stellar combination of fresh flavors, steps up as the season’s MVP. Local restaurants showed us this classic packs enough flavor and substance to satisfy both your taste buds and your appetite.

Deconstructed Deliciousness

Celestial Café’s deconstructed crab cake put a twist on this summer classic. Smooth, lightly lemony crab salad is sandwiched between three cornmeal Johnny Cakes for a crispy touch. This beautifully presented dish delighted us with its ad.dition of microgreens, red peppers, sweet onions and Celestial’s own lemoncello artichoke bur blanc. This version passed the deep-fryer for a healthy take we felt fantastic about. 567 South County Trail, Exeter. 295-5559, www.celestialcaferi.com

Two Claws Up

Served on a bed of sautéed garlic spinach, Two Gulls Café’s cake had visible pieces of real shredded crab. Mixed with just enough green onion and red pepper, this dish was light on breading that created a super flavorful, yet not-too-fishy, ode to crab. An unadulterated take on the traditional crab cake, this is a great option for the crabcake rookie. 2 State Street, Narragansett. 783-4855, www.twogullscafe.com

No Shells About It

Siena’s Tortino Di Granchio combined authentic Tuscan influences and seasonal simplicity that made for a light crab crake laced with buttery deliciousness. High quality, lump crabmeat takes center stage with support by parmesan, sour cream, garlic and freshly chopped parsley. Topped with a red basil cream sauce and fresh cracked pepper, this super chewy and flaky interpretation will give you a reason to try something new. 5600 Post Road, East Greenwich. 885-8850, www.sienari.com

Relish Every Bite

Light and moist, this version from Jim’s Dock packed the perfect crab-to-filling ratio. A tangy tartar sauce was whipped with pickle relish and Dijon mustard that helped cut through the savory cake for a bite that was anything but average. Lightly lemony, we all agreed that this real-deal Maryland style crab cake would work perfectly on a simple green salad. 1175 Succotash Road, Wakefield. 783-2050
