Balancing Act

For Ramona Bessinger, massage is more than providing simple pain or stress relief. It’s a way to nourish the body and the soul, which is why her practice at Jamestown Wellness is nothing short of extraordinary.

“I combine Western massage with Ayurveda, which is a more holistic body-balancing approach to healing,” she explains. Ayurveda, which means “life force,” is a 3,000-year-old system of healing pain by looking at the body as a whole. Through conversations with clients, Ramona gathers information about their lives and needs and finds out if they have specific pain-relief goals. “Then I go to work treating not just the area of pain, but the origin of their pain,” she explains.

I recently experienced a therapeutic massage by Ramona that was, simply put, blissful. Ramona says she typically begins treatments by balancing the body, from the physical form to the soul, while using her Western training and knowledge of anatomy to understand the muscles and origin of pain. She focuses deeply on the back and spine, as they typically hold a lot of the tension of daily life, from soreness due to intense exercise to work stress.

“Everybody’s body is like a puzzle. It is my job to look at all the pieces of that puzzle and create a whole picture,” explains Ramona. This restorative, nourishing approach emboldens her to ask clients about outside factors that could be contributing to postural misalignment or muscle tension. With the soft hum of world music throughout the space and sensory-soothing essential and Ayurvedic organic Banyan Botanicals oils offering lovely herbal scents, Ramona’s unique Eastern/Western massage is a feast for the senses, and often produces immediate results.

“My clients come in feeling pain, and [they’re] exhausted, anxious or stressed… They leave feeling balanced and restored. Their pain has gone away and body balance has returned,” she says.

It’s clear when someone loves what they do, and Ramona is no exception. “As a result of being of service to others, my personal life takes on depth so that together, with every person who walks through my door, the world is left better than before,” she explains. “In this small way, I am making a difference on this planet, enhancing one life at a time as pain slips away and body balance is restored.”
