8 Thanksgiving Sandwiches We're Thankful For

Turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, oh my

So much of Thanksgiving builds up to the one-day whirlwind of food, family and football, but for some individuals, the aftermath of leftovers is the beginning of something beautiful, the Thanksgiving sandwich. Thankfully such a sandwich is not reserved solely for after T-Day, as cafes and delis all across the state offer their own variations.

A feast for the eyes as much as the appetite, Ten Sandwiches’ creation puts a unique spin on the usual Thanksgiving sandwich by introducing roasted sweet potato and cranberry-pepper relish – delicious! The croissant makes a fantastic vehicle for dipping into the side of apple cider gravy, which brings out the house-roasted turkey flavor. 98 Bay St, Westerly. 315-2620

With an outstanding wheat-bread-to-sausage-stuffing ratio, the Blue Kangaroo’ssandwich is a moan-inducing meal that brings out the best of Thanksgiving’s tastes. Real bits of cranberry, hefty pieces of sausage, sizeable slices of tur- key, a powdering of cinnamon and cloves - few sandwiches can be so meaty and yet still give each ingredient enough breathing room to shine on their own. 328 County Rd, Barrington. 401-289-2292.

More of a meal than a sandwich, Jigger’s open-face stacks thick cuts of turkey, sausage stuffing and deep-fried onions above a bed of sourdough just thick enough to soak up all that Thanksgiving goodness. The sandwich comes with a side of dipping gravy and cranberry sauce, along with seasoned sweet potato fries. 145 Main St, East Greenwich. 884-6060.

Forget tradition. Forget extravagance. The Cheese Plate forges an appetite-appeasing piece of edible art that breaks the Thanksgiving sandwich mold. Swiss cheese melts atop slices of roasted turkey and fresh arugula, all slathered with a sweet cranberry mayo and folded into melts-in-the-mouth naan bread. It may not be the usual Thanksgiving sandwich, but it’s one hell of a delicious experience. 54 State St, Warren. 401-245-3932.

Rather than reinvent the wheel, Picnic Basket’s Thanksgiving sandwich sticks to the classic formula, bringing out the best of its inherent flavors. Real pieces of cranberry make for an explosive complement to the strong French bread, while a subtle stuffing lets the turkey take center stage. A refreshing take on an iconic sandwich. 20 Kingstown Road, Narragansett. 782-2284.

The Clements’ Market’s wrap itself comes in four varieties (spinach, sun dried tomato, wheat and plain), all pairing well with the internal ingredients of herby stuffing, sweet- but-still-tart cranberry sauce and moist turkey. And by allowing some customization, the sandwich becomes a catered comfort food that meets an individual eater’s needs. 2575 E Main Rd, Portsmouth. 401-683-0180.

Chomping into East Ferry Deli’s Thanksgiving sandwich is like reliving the holiday all over again. Sweet cranberry sauce, crisp lettuce, fluffy stuffing, rich turkey meat - it’s a sandwich jampacked with ingredients, yet sits surprisingly light in the stomach. It looks and tastes so good, if we hadn’t ordered it ourselves, we would have thought it was homemade. 47 Conanicus Ave, Jamestown. 423-1592.

By doing away with stuffing, Ricotti’s sandwich lets the thick turkey and peppered tomatoes take center stage. Slices of rich bacon balance out the cranberry sauce, while the hearty bread and crisp lettuce give it a textured, satisfying bite that reminded us of a club sandwich. 11 Gooding Ave, Bristol. 401-253-1614.
